Training Grenades Out in the Wild

SHAH ALAM: Back in 2021, Malaysian Defence posted the story on the request for bids (RFB)for 20,000 eco-friendly training hand grenades (EFTHG). The LOA of RM2.8 million for the RFB was awarded to Prima Technology Sdn Bhd.

In 2023, the training grenades were shipped home so it is likely that there are in service with the Army. On August 28, 8 Rejimen Renjer Di Raja (8 RRD) published a post and pictures of a training exercise they conducted at the Zulkiple’s Urban Combat Village (ZUCOV) at the Army’s Training Centre better known as Pulada, at Sungai Tiram, Johor. It was here the first picture of the use of the training hand grenade was made public.

Grenade, grenade. A Ranger trooper throwing a live hand grenade at the Pulada live firing range. 8 RRD.

The use of the blue training hand grenade showed that usefulness of the training devices for combat training especially in built-up areas. In the past, I believed, the Army used flash bang grenades for such exercise. Training hand grenades are more useful in such circumstances as these replicated the handling of a live grenade.
An 8 RRD squad in a tense scenario at ZUCOV. Although they are equipped NVG, the lack of eye and ear protection are noteworthy.

Posted here are the pictures at the ZUCOV facility and the firing range of Pulada conducted by the battalion. The only reservations I have about them was the lack of eye and ear protection for the soldiers as shown by the pictures. I am not blaming the leadership or the soldiers of course. As usual they make do with what they have.

Pulada has a sentimental value to me as my late dad used to be an instructor there in the mid-1970s. I was a young boy then and the only thing I remember about Pulada was the Vespa ride from Kem Majidee – where my family stayed. A few years ago, I drove a car from the site of Kem Majidee to Pulada and the road there was full of traffic and the urban sprawl from Johor Bahru. In the past there was nothing along the roads apart from oil palm plantations.

Anyhow, as for the tender for more training grenades – 30,000 units – published early this year, eleven bidders took part in it. The highest bid is RM7.312 million while the lowest is RM6.750 million. Two bidders put in the same price which was RM6.9 million. Based on the bids, I am guessing the budget is RM7 million.

  • Development & urbanisation has crept up around bases inc Sg Besi AB, and even the road fronting Wardieburn camp is endless traffic jam.

    • Its no longer Sg Besi AB, it has been transferred to 1MDB. And its not just the camps you mentioned its happening all over the country. As for the Wardieburn, it is even more stark once you get inside.

  • Yeah the former SG Besi AB, when it was still operational its surroundings have been steadily consumed by developments. The transfer to 1MDB is a culmination of inevitable.

Theres pros & cons on the rapid development, for the servicemen its just a short hop out of base during leave to relax & have a good time (if not balik kampung). Food choice & delivery of goods is far better than old with the services of GRAB & Shopee. Internet & mobile coverage is also far better than in rural areas so video phone calls makes rindu less.

    • The only reason Sg Besi AB redevelopment was the building of the TRX. They need to take her out due to aerodrome regulations no tall buildings is allowed around it.

Too much distraction and temptation actually.

  • Nowadays in the internet world, we cannot fully isolate and block out even if its valid security reasons.
Recently there was a USA ship crew caught installing Starlnk onboard their naval ship so they could bypass military network restrictions and having internet while on sea. Much like population Gen mindset gap, todays young people needs have to be considered rather than push out.

Of course the other way is to make new camps in the middle of nowhere and relocate urbanised bases to them. Which is a thing been done but some have complained we are giving more up than getting back...

    • People complained about the build and transfer as it has happened before Mindef did not get the ROI from such deals.
