SHAH ALAM: The Home Ministry has issued three separate tenders for the supply of four-wheel-drive pickup trucks, saloon cars and vans for the police operational usage. The number of pickup trucks being sought is 221; thirty saloon cars and 240 for vans.
The pick-up trucks being sought are the dual-cab version with an open bed, with an engine between 2.4 litre and 3.0 litre, just like the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navarra; and Mitsubishi Triton. The police pick-up will however carry the PDRM logo; snorkel exhaust and equipped with an integrated light and siren system.
According to the tender documents the pick-up trucks would be used as a pool vehicle by police personnel for patrol and surveillance duties. They are unlike the gunasama pickup trucks used to carry personnel and dead bodies.
There is no estimate cost for the pick-up trucks unlike for the tenders for the saloon cars and vans though. The estimated cost for the thirty saloon cars is RM5.6 million while for the vans it is RM38.4 million.
The saloon cars, according to the tender documents, offered should be 2.0 litre or 2.5 litre or 1.4 litre to 1.6 litre if fitted with a turbocharger. The saloon cars offered should be regular vehicles as the police are not asking for any extra accessories on them.
The vans – which will be used as a pool vehicle – must be able to carry twelve people including a driver with a curb weight between 3,400kg to 3,800kg. It must be equipped with a 2.8 litre engine, direct injection common rail, 4-cylinder, 16V with a turbo intercooler. The vans will be fitted with PDRM stickers only.
The tender for the pickup trucks was published on April 1 and closes on May 13; saloon cars March 18 and closed on April 15; and the vans published on March 15 and closes on April 26. It is likely the current brouhaha with Spanco Sdn Bhd – which leases vehicles to the government – is the reason for the three tenders.

My predictions will be
Pickup - Hilux
Saloon - Civic
Van - Hiace
IINM even those vehicles bought outright by Govt will be sent to Spanco for servicing. So depending when the dust will settle, the selected 'approved crony' will still gain from this buy.
No lah, these vehicles, as it would be distributed across the country will be sent to the nearest service centre while under warranty. Only leased vehicles would be sent back to the leasing companies.
