SHAH ALAM: Sappers ready to operate truck cranes. It appears that the Rejimen Askar Jurutera Di Raja (RAJD) is prepared to operate the newly delivered Tadano medium truck-mounted cranes. Some 48 sappers from the regiment have completed the training to operate and maintain the truck-mounted cranes used to set up bridges. The training was conducted at the Field Engineering Institute camp in Johor, recently.

It is likely that as the RAJD has had no recent experience in operating truck-mounted cranes for building bridges, its commanders felt the need to certify the sappers destined to operate and maintain them. The training and certification also allowed the trainers at the training institute to be certified as well.

As reported previously, most bridging operations – conducted for the emergency construction of Bailey bridges – were done using locally hired truck cranes based on case-by-case basis.

The Army bought the eight Tadano medium truck mounted cranes in early 2022 as part of its Mobility programme. Also procured were light and heavy excavators, emergency bridges and water purifiers. As the RAJD already operates the excavators, it is likely they saw no need to hold special training serial for the operators and maintainers. This could be held at the unit level without the involvement of the training institute, which also have certified trainers for such vehicles as well.

    • AFAIK, there are no bridging equipment units in Sabah/ Sarawak. Perhap, they will have one later on or in the process of setting up one. I stand to be corrected of course. One Division RAJD unit, 3 SKN only has the equipment for the floating pontoon bridge. They do not use cranes for the pontoon bridge, it is manhandled into position.

  • Facepalm when, due to road legality reasons, the camo paintjob is in stark contrast with the bright warning stripes. It doesn't appear they have mounts for emergency covers that would hide these when they are deployed during emergency situations. Also it doesn't help that they retained all those branding names & badges, some which are in stark contrast ie CASE on their excavators (just why?)

  • ''It doesn’t appear they have mounts for emergency covers that would hide these when they are deployed during emergency situations.''

To be a devil's advocate such assets when deployed will not be exposed to direct fire and if they come under indirect fire; whether they have ''emergency covers'' to hide ''bright warning stripes'' and other things; wouldn't make a difference.

  • To be the devil's advocate's advocate that would make any camo pretty pointless and if so why not just keep in its original civvie colour scheme then. But to be sure, nowadays one doesn't need to be in direct firing position to be detected and fired upon.

  • "make any camo pretty pointless and if so why not just keep in its original civvie colour scheme"

For the simple reason that army vehicles tend to be painted in a standard scheme irrespective of whether a combat asset, a supporting asset or another type. It's called uniformity...

"nowadays one doesn’t need to be in direct firing position to be detected and fired upon"

It's not "nowadays" but for a very long time already actually.. Centuries.

The point I was clearly making is that some assets will not be exposed to direct fire or observation thus the fact that they may contain certain features which make them more visible compared to combat assets is not a concern or the issue you make it out to be...

    • No idea really. As whether or not, the truck cranes will also be delivered to Sabah and Sarawak, again I have no idea. Technically, it should.
