SHAH ALAM: Due to the pandemic, RMAF and the rest of the Malaysian Armed Forces have had to defer or outright cancelled various exercises involving foreign partners and local ones. But with the relaxation of travel restrictions due to the increasing lower infections, exercises carried out locally has returned with a vengeance.
RMAF is currently hosting two exercises with its partners; the first one is with the Indian Air Force, the Udara Shakti 2022 which started yesterday at the Kuantan airbase. The exercise involved RMAF own No. 12 Squadron with its Sukhoi Su-30MKM Flankers with a contingent of IAF Su-30MKIs. The exercise is a culmination of the contact both squadrons had back in 2018.
RMAF confirmed the exercise in a press statement today, advising the public not to be alarmed over low level flights of the Malaysian and Indian Flankers around Kuantan. The exercise which starts on August 12 ends on the 17th. The IAF contingent include at least one Boeing C-17 Globemaster and four Su-30MKIs. It is unclear whether the same contingent will then fly to Australia for the upcoming Exercise Pitch Black 2022. No 12 Squadron was originally scheduled to take part in Pitch Black but it was cancelled for unknown reasons.
RMAF is also hosting another exercise, this time a multi-lateral one – Exercise Pacific Angel Siri 2-22 which is organised by the US Pacific Air Force (PACAF). Apart from the PACAF and RMAF, the exercise will also involve Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU); RAAF, Mongolian Air Force and Philippines Air Force.
