Nine Radar Stations To Monitor Sabah Waters
SEMPORNA (Sabah), Aug 12 (Bernama) — The Malaysian armed forces will install nine radar stations along the east coast of Sabah to step up surveillance in the state’s waters, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Tuesday.
The deputy prime minister said the radar stations would be installed in stages, with the first one to be set up in Tawau.
“These radar will provide more effective coverage of the Ops Pasir area whereby even small boats can be detected and pictures can be taken and transmitted directly to the control centre,” he told a news conference after watching an integrated exercise involving the armed forces, police and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), here. Ops Pasir is an integrated defence arrangement.
Najib, who is also the defence minister, said the radar would be able to detect the movement of boats and ships at a distance of 70 km.
Asked about Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to be used for surveillance, he said this was still at the testing stage.
“Once we have received all the UAVs, we can use them for the Ops Pasir area,” he said.
The armed forces now have two UAVs for testing purposes.
On the ongoing exercise, Najib said it was to test the capability of the three agencies in responding to abductions by terrorist groups.
Ops Pasir was launched on Sept 20 2000 following two incidents of abduction in Pulau Sipadan and Pulau Padanan which encompass 19 islands and 21 settlements.

Dear Marhalim,
Does anybody knows what type of radar are they getting for this purposes? I checked in I Sabah it mentioned a city called Santiago, Pennsylvania USA. Can you confirmed?
Marhalim: As far as I know no contracts for radars have been signed within the last three years apart from the ThalesRaytheon Sentry system but that its for the Malaysian Air Defence Ground Environment System. The contract was signed in April. No financial details were disclosed.. There was a tender for a relocatable radar system earlier this year or late last year but there is no word on who actually won the tender and it could be that it was the radar from ThalesRaytheon. However that is one radar. And not nine as mentioned in the Bernama stories. The only thing that come close was the MMEA purchase of the Sagem VIGY optronic system announced earlier this year but this is an Infrared sensor for day and night surveillance. with zoom and laser range finder.
Honestly I am not too familiar with radar systems but as far as I know infra-red radars are usually used in satellite for weather imaging. Land based weather radar also used infra-red technology.
ThalesRaytheon do have another system the Homeland Alerter 100. which uses Radio Frequency (RF) energy of transmitters is scattered from targets, correlated with the direct path signal to provide time difference of arrival (ellipsoide) and doppler measurements and passive radar sensor utilizes civilian electromagnetic radiations in order to detect and estimate target parameters (location and speed).. Could this be the system that is going to be installed in Sabah? I will be checking...
oo..no wonder the KSU went to US last few months..about the radar le ni..i c..
Do note Azlan comment in the first story. I stand corrected this whole thing could be a misunderstanding caused by reporters who did not ask the right questions....
Many tanks Marhalim
The radars are NOT Raytheon.
