SHAH ALAM: RMN has introduced a new operational uniform for the service replacing the light blue digital camo introduced in 2016. The new operational uniform is also digital but sported a darker grey camo. The colour of the new digital camo/operational uniform is like the ones currently used by Royal Australian Navy but the digital pattern is much bigger and therefore, the uniform looked darker.

A previous story on the introduction of digital ball caps for RMN in 2019. The new digital camo would have been introduced at the RMN’s 90th anniversary parade but that was cancelled following the helicopter crashes which killed ten. It is likely only a small batch of the new uniforms were ordered as there is no tender or quotation notices for them on the Eperolehan or government tender website. I stand to be corrected of course.

The two sailors (far left and far right) are wearing the new one; white is the one used pre-war and after war; dark colour in the 1960; blue uniform is the one used from the 70s to 2016 before being replaced by the light blue digital camo.

At the ceremony today held at the Lumut naval base, the uniforms were put on display by KD Lekiu personnel. It is likely that they will be using the new uniforms when they take part in RIMPAC 2024 which starts next month. It was also the first time Lekiu was seen after her emergency refit at Lumut Naval Shipyard, adjacent of the naval base.

Hopefull the one for use with body armour is the combat shirt-style which will be much cooler when worn.

  1. The white strip on the arms for long sleeve jacket looks like reflectors tape sewn on mariners coverall. Why not add it on the trousers too.

  2. Unnecessary spending. The previous one isn’t bad. If there were complaints was ‘ia cepat pudar’, which is the problem with QC, not design. Worse, this new camo resembles Kuantan PBT uniform.

  3. Its the second one actually. I believed the rage for digital camo is the result of cheap camo avaiable from China manufacturers. It must also be noted that some enforcement officers at local councils are ex-military as well hence their preference for such camo.
