Cabinet Approves Purchase Of 21 Helicopters For Police Force
LABUAN, Aug 12 (Bernama) — The Cabinet has approved the Royal Malaysian Police’s (PDRM) request for 21 helicopters of various types.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the government has not however fixed the date of purchase.
At present the force has 12 helicopters, Musa said when met after visiting the Royal Malaysian Navy’s Station Five at Terumbu Layang-Layang near here.
Musa had attended Ops Pasir a joint exercise of the Malaysian Armed Forces, PDRM and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency in Sabah waters.
He said the helicopters were for both patrolling and crime prevention purposes.
Two police helicopters are being used by the General Operations Force (GOF) to patrol Sabah waters.
Asked about the joint exercise, Musa said: “We always enhance training from time to time. We too have a base in the Semporna district that houses the marine police and the GOF.”
He said there were about 3,000 marine police personnel to watch over Sabah waters.

Too bad the reporter failed to find out the type of helicopters to be purchased. Does it include the AW101?

Lets just hope the PDRM doesn't end up with 2-3 different types of helis. Apart from some Ecuriels and PC-6s, does anyone know what else the PDRM air wing operates?
Marhalim: They also operate the JetRanger before but I am not sure whether they are still around. I have not been to Simpang in Ages Word is that PDRM is looking for more Ecquriels, (spelling?) instead of buying any other type. The AW109 Power is good but I am sure PDRM has learnt from Bomba and army that its electronics are too temperamental for the tropics. I mentioned the AW101 as the PDRM did asked for at least two of them as tactical troop transporters as they did not want to rely on the air force or the army for such operations. I wonder what would happened if PDRM got their AW101 and the air force got Cougars?
