More Light Repair Vehicles Being Sought

SHAH ALAM: The Army has issued a tender seeking to procure nine light recovery vehicles (LRV) or light tow/repair trucks for its combat support units. The tender was published on June 20 and closes on August 1.

The public portion of the tender did not say much apart from that they were looking for a supplier to supply and deliver nine LRV as part of the Army mobility programme, combat support. The LRVs are used to repair or towed one-tonne trucks in the Army – from the Land Rovers to the Cendana Auto 4X4 vehicles.

And most of the LRVs are Land Rover variants which has been in service for at least two decades now. These vehicles have been supplemented by 13 light forward repair vehicle (LFRV) which contract was awarded to Mildef International Technologies Sdn Bhd for RM5.8 million.

The tender for this contract was published in June, 2021. No pictures of these Mildef LFRV has been published though I am assuming it must be based either on a Toyota Hilux or Isuzu DMAX chassis.

Despite the different designation – LFRV and LRV – I believed both vehicles do the same job. It is interesting to note the units that operate them designated the unit as the Forward Repair Team (FRT).

The latest LRV, I believed, is a replacement for a tender for 15 LRV originally published in May, last year but was cancelled without further explaination as the usual practice. The cancelled tender was supposed to be published for 21 days though compared to 42 days for the new tender.

Yes, I know combat support vehicles are not sexy as combat vehicles but without them the Army will simply grind to a halt.
