SHAH ALAM: Just five months after his appointment, MMEA director-general Admiral (Maritime) Hamid Mohd Amin, will retire effective tomorrow. Hamid, who turned 60, tomorrow, was appointed as the sixth MMEA DG on November 6, last year.
Malaysian Defence had speculated that he was given a two-year contract like the IGP but his mandatory retirement meant this was wrong. He was appointed as the DG in November even though he was supposed to go on mandatory leave that month.
Other civil servants who were promoted during the mandatory leave period before retirement are usually given a contract to extend their service. In this case, it was not. The government should have promoted him as the DG when his predecessor retired in March last year instead of waiting for the last moment.
There is no indication who will succeed Hamid though. Based on seniority, Vice Admiral (Maritime) Saipul Lizan Ibrahim, who is the deputy director general (logistics) and made the acting DG until Hamid’s appointment is the logical choice. That said it will depend on the Home Minister DS Shaifuddin Nasution to make the decision. Based on what happened previously, I will not put any money on it. It must be noted Shaifuddin is in Bangkok, Thailand, from today to tomorrow for a schedule visit.
