SHAH ALAM: IT’s Galaxy Aerospace. In a previous post, Malaysian Defence wrote that Galaxy Aerospace Sdn Bhd won the bid for a slew of maintenance contracts for the two AW139 maritime operation helicopters (MOH). The two helicopters are operated by the RMN air wing at the Kota Kinabalu naval base. The cost of the contracts comes to RM2.86 million.
And now Galaxy Aerospace has won the tenders to conduct annual routine inspection and maintenance of the two helicopters. Both contracts are listed at RM75,000 though it did not say the duration. It is likely for the duration of three years, just like other maintenance contracts.
Galaxy Aerospace was the company that won the contract to supply the three MOH. And it appears that the maintenance for the third one – likely to be delivered at any time – will be awarded to Galaxy Aerospace as well.
The company is only one or two local aerospace companies which is certified to maintain government helicopters under the RMAF’s Directorate General Technical Airworthiness (DGTA) as well as Leonardo, the OEM, one of the main requirements for the maintenance tenders.
Anyhow, it appears that the Army Air Wing will be conducting the routine maintenance of the six MD-530G light scout attack helicopters that had been delivered, for the time being. Destini Bhd which had supplied the helicopters had hope to get the maintenance contract. Sources told Malaysian Defence this will not happen any time soon.
I was not told the reason, but it is likely that the Army Air Wing felt that its technicians which were sent to the United States for training could cope with the routine maintenance of the helicopters for the immediate future.
It must be noted that Sapura Aviation Sdn Bhd, which owns a single MD500 helicopter, is the authorised maintenance provider for MD Helicopters civil line.
