SHAH ALAM: A fire broke out on KD Laksamana Muhammad Amin corvette (pennant number 136) while she is undergoing the Obsolescence Programme Plus (OP Plus) at the Grade Marine Shipyard in Lumut today.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received a distress call at 10.03am and firemen from Manjung were sent to the scene. He said Laksamana Muhammad Amin was at the shipyard at Kampung Acheh here when the fire occurred.
“The fire affected 10 per cent of the ammunition storage room. However, there was no ammunition there when the fire broke out.
“The port’s Emergency Response Team and firemen are currently putting out the blaze.” It is likely that the fire had been put down already based on the latest reports.
Malaysian Defence has reported previously that the ship was undergoing the OP Plus work at the shipyard which involved the replacement of her engines, generators, and a new hull.
Malaysian Defence described it as the OP Plus as it involved the fabrication of a new hull and some instances new superstructure altogether as in the case of KD Sri Johor and KD Perkasa.
The second training ship, KD Teguh Samudera also caught fire while being finished at Grade One shipyard back in 2016.

Surely that shipyard must be jinxed. Seriously, don’t laugh but hantu and things like that do exist. I have even seen one myself…
Can somebody explain to me how we keep having fires on nearly all steel warships? I am sure all warships are designed to minimise the chance of fire onboard and easily contained.
Hasnan,
Ships will have some level of DC; i.e. separate compartments; etc; and will have crews trained for DC. In this case the fire broke out whilst the ship was in a yard under the responsibility of the yard.

In addition to Azlan, usually there is hot work involving welding, where at the same time there is some consumables or equipment cover / cables, around the hot work area, that if one mishandling the work, will cause fire.
hot work can be due to rework or modification notice.
