SHAH ALAM: The Defence Ministry has issued tenders for uniforms in bulk which it has not done so in the last few years for unknown reasons. The biggest tender is for 334,485 pairs of No 3 uniform or dress for the Army for a period of three years.

Two other tenders are for 40,365 pairs of ladies No 3 uniform also for the Army and No 1 ceremonial dress for the lower ranks of the RMAF. Both are also for a period of three years. The Army digital camo is the No 5 uniform. The last big tender for No 5 digital camouflage was made in 2021. It is unclear who won the tender or was it awarded as Eperolehan has not announced which company won the bid.

The public specifications for No 3 uniform did not state how many are to be delivered in a year, therefore I am guessing that it should be around 100,000 pairs annually. The indicative cost is RM53 million and change.

Officers with 4th Division at the unit’s 44th anniversary parade on January 3, 2025. Four of the officers in the No 3 uniform took part in the parade or in reserve as they are wearing marching boots. The officer in the middle is wearing the No 2 uniform or bush jacket and office shoes. Army.

It is likely that each soldier up to the rank of Major will be issued at least two pairs of the No 3 uniform, the working dress for soldiers. Higher ranking officers, I believe, are allowed to make their No 3 uniforms at tailors of their own choosing, using the cloth procured from the same supplier as the ones ordered for the lower ranks. I stand to be corrected, of course.
Male and female soldiers in the No 3 uniform taking part in the 4th Division anniversary parade on January 3, 2025. Note the different physical appearances of the female soldiers. That is the reason their uniforms are made to measure while the male ones had to do with off the rack ones. They can also take them to tailors for alterations.

As for the female No 3 uniforms, these will be made to measure due to variance of their physique. The indicative cost for this tender is RM10 million and change.
Soldiers from 6th Brigade at the change-of command ceremony on January 3. They are in their No 3 uniform. Note the soldiers are of a certain height and size, making it easier to manufacture the uniform in bulk. Soldiers can also alter them if they wish to but at their own cost.

As for the RMAF No 1 dress, the number being sought is 10,713 pairs. These are meant for both male and female soldiers. The indicative cost is RM6 million and change.
RMAF airmen stands at attention for an honour parade on October 28, 2024. They are all wearing the No 1 ceremonial dress.

Bidders must present samples for further evaluation when submitting their bids for the three tenders.

  1. Indonesia and Thailand seem to be able to supply very close fitting uniforms (the equivalent to our No 3) to their soldiers. Are they custom made?

  2. I have no idea really but if I am guessing the uniforms of the lower rank soldiers in the two countries are manufactured en masse like ours. As for their tight fitting, again, I am guessing that it is by design though very feminine style really.

  3. During my time, the two sets issued is insufficient. I always go to the tailor to make to measure at least another two paors especially when going for courses. The standard issued ones does not fit. So again these were sent to the tailor. All these additional n fitting comes out of my own pocket

  4. Reduce the number of uniforms. They dont need the extra work and the country dont need the extra expenses.

  5. How many variants would a regular grunt need? A combat/camo set, marching/band set, official dress set, and Tshirt for training and R&R.

  6. There is around five or six uniforms for grunts, around seven for officers. For official R&R they used the approriate uniforms, for own time, they used their own clothes.

  7. “There is around five or six uniforms for grunts, around seven for officers.”
Crazy! No wonder it was a money making machine, moreso in todays tender than before.
