A new country is born. World politics is always changing, something we must always be prepared for, from our defence perspective. As for malaysia, we must strive to make everyone feels that they are a malaysian first and foremost, and willing to sacrifice to defend it. When our people start to feel that they are a proud overseas indian/chinese/indonesian/thai/filipino/etc first, then we are heading towards trouble. When Lt adnan give up his life fighting at bukit candu, it was because he believes that he is defending his home country, irrespective that we was not even a singaporean.

What does it mean to be Malaysian first? In a hodgepodge society, everyone has their own opinion what it means to them and it can conflict with each other’s opinion. The is a fallacy of plural society and we’re aren’t the only ones. USA and multicultural EU countries have the same identity crisis.

Take the previously newest country, South Sudan, now in a civil war soon after their independence war to break from Sudan. The South Sudanese got disenfranchised with central Sudan because they don’t see themselves as part of their country, hence their break and now some South Sudanese are fighting again because they don’t see themselves as part of their new country.

OTOH natural mono-culturals like Korea & Japan is where the people most identify with their culture and country, their bond with their country is natural and strong, however forced mono-culturalism like China, Indonesia, & Singapore often can lead to simmering race issues. There is no right answer to please everyone and make everyone feel belong. People should be given the means to choose and go to where they feel belong, either is staying forever in their ethnic villages & kampungs or move overseas.
